Depression treatments range from psychotherapeutic and traditional medical methods to alternative treatment ways. Precisely they include:

  • Natural remedies and cures for depression
  • Depression Medicine
  • Self coaching to healing Depression
  • Combined therapy and drugs
  • ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy)
  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
  • TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)
  • VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation)

First three of the treatment methods of depression above are explained elsewhere on this website. Here, let us brief you what the rest of the treatments are.

Combined Therapy and Drugs:

Combined therapy and drugs for depression is also known as a combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy approach to the disorder. Although the two approaches are theoretically discordant, a recent survey of 45 physicians who are training analysts at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, a leading urban center, and 62 per cent of whom had at least one patient on medication (Roose and Donovan) revealed that they judged the analytic process and mood disorder of their patients as improved due to a combination of psychoanalysis and pharmacotherapy approach.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT):

A highly controversial treatment method for depression, ECT is often criticized due to its short-lived effects and its causing memory loss and brain damage. There is no doubt that it is a very risky treatment method for depression. That’s why it is suggested as a last resort and the patient is required to make the decision.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR):

It is not known how or why EMDR works. One school of thought states that our subconscious minds possess the capability to cope up with various difficult issues during our dreams. Similarly, EMDR allows one to work on issues by replicating the rapid eye movement of dreaming. Here is how it works.
The EMDR therapist holds his/her three middle fingers together about six inches in front of the patient’s eyes. The patient is to follow the rhythmically back and forth moving fingers and attempt to solve the problematic issues in his brain. This has resulted in the reduction and sometimes elimination of depression for many sufferers.

Transcranial Medical Stimulation (TMS):

This treatment method of depression uses a very powerful magnetic field that is created by a stimulating coil. The magnetic field is focused and passed through the skull by holding the coil close to the scalp. Local electrical currents are produced by the field in tissue. With frequency parameters and the sufficient dosing, if applied to the proper cortical areas, TMS can result in a successful treatment of depression.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS):

VNS therapy has given remarkable results to the patients of depression. It increases energy, improves relationships with friends and family members, and more importantly it helps you to function properly at work and in everyday activities, thus helping you in coming out of the depression. Here is how it works.
This therapy stimulates via a device that is implanted just under skin in the left chest area. The device sends irregular, mild electrical impulses through a lead to the left vagus nerve. The nerve then sends the signals to the brain. Each patient or a caregiver can abort or initiate stimulation with the help of a hand-held magnet. The device can be programmed for the individual patient according to his conditions.
